Looking forward to welcoming Gary O’Donnell back on the ones and twos this June
Tell us a little about yourself and what got you started as a Dj ?
I started in 1982. Hip Hop was just taking off and I couldn’t dance, rap or draw. A friend got a twin turntable disco unit for christmas and it kinda started there..
Best place you have played?
The best place I have played is either Ministry of Sound on New Years Day in 1995, following David Morales (which as a house DJ is probably one of the best gigs and slots you can get) or on the tablism side, winning the very first Vestax Europe battle at PLASA, Earls Court in 1994
Any big plans for this year ?
No real plans for the year; I’m really enjoying the organic growth of portablism, along with the Skratchlinkup crew (6 of which are coming along to NUE) we are finding more and more people getting into scratching and once the weather picks up, there will be more “flashmob” scratch events popping up. It will be an important summer; the past two years have encouraged an interest in scratching again and we hope that it will raise up by another level by the end of the year.
Tell us your funniest moments when out playing ?
Funniest thing… In hindsight…
I was in the middle of a set in Ministry of Sound and two women where at the side of the stage watching the set and being really into it. My records were on a table next to them. Unfortunately they knocked the table and 100 records went flying over the floor mid set. I was fuming at the time, but looking back, it’s a story to tell…
Anyone who you would like to collaborate / Dj with?
Collabs..
I have been quite lucky over the past few years. Open deck jams have given me the opportunity to cut with people I admire like Dubbadutch (from Dat Brass), Jon 1st, Vekked and the Spanish, Swedish, Greek and Swiss DMC champs. I’m just really into cutting with anyone who is dope, friendly and passionate about the artform. Skill level isnt even that important but a vibe for it is what really puts a smile on my face.
